Those flavor came through in the taste as well, followed by coffee and nuts. The chocolate hit the nose first then the malt. It had a nice head and a deep, deep ,black-brown color. It had great balance and worked well with my complimentary pickle plate. It was a golden straw colored and not as light as some other Kolsches, 5.1 ABV. Heidi was definitely proud of their Kolsch "Sunbru"which was an award winner of the 2014 Kolsch Award, and 2012 World Gold Cup Beer Award going toe to toe with some of the best Kolsch's in Germany. It was smooth like a cream ale but with the softer but distinct tast of both an English Ale and IPA. It has a smooth, medium head and a nice Sundevil straw color. At 6.9 ABV and 55 IBUS, it was smooth with a slight bitterness from the English Ale side and a subtle but noticeable hoppy finish which was made this a distinct IPA. She promptly delivered a short pour of their English IPA and two tasters of their Kolsch and Stout. We also talked about the Kolsch and Stout as I mentioned I liked the full spectrum of beers except IPAs only because they are too popular and breweries try too hard to out IPA each other. Heidi had returned to check on me and she recommended the Raj IPA to go with my meal. Overall it is a good Scottish Ale that drinks like a Pilsner.ĭanielle brought me my meal an exceptional spicy sausage and shrimp pasta. This pour had a weak, short lasting head. There was no back bite and it had a short but pleasant finish. The roasted barley stood out as did the caramel notes. It was lighter in taste than expected but in a good way. Kilt Lifter was a light golden brown, with copper hues. She went to get it and soon my server Danielle came by to get me started, which was already taken care of by the manager. She asked me what I wanted and I went straight for the Scottish Ale - Kilt Lifter. We talked for a bit about the brewery, events they have, the history, favorite beers and the like. Very kind and accommodating and handled the situation flawlessly. The manager Heidi comes around and lets me know she will be seating people here shortly and finds me another table to settle into. It turns out they do have a seating plan and I totally missed the hostess. The place was rockin' for a Thursday night and after parking in the back and seeing no hostess after security, I walked around and found a lonely table in the corner and sat down to wait for service. They are located on 8th Street near the college and in an old creamery and ice house. I visited Four Peaks Brewing in Tempe Arizona.
